You are correct that it is a maturity level but it maturity level of a learned skill. There are those students who will set to cheat and / or plagiarize. We are not addressing that group but rather those that improperly cite or use material due to lack of instruction.

We often find that a student will conscientiously do the research. Upon reading a source the student will say Wow, this is exactly what I wanted to say but the article states so much better. I will cut and paste it and just cite it in my references. This recently happened in one of my CS courses. When I asked this student Would he have done this in an english class?, I received a resounding NO. What was it in the students mind that differentiated the english paper from the computer science paper?

During one of the Literacy Information sessions with the mathematics class, a site was found that seemed to have been written by an expert but careful examination of the entire site failed to turn up any credentials, citations or references for the assertions made.

The ethical use and the skill to evaluate information must also be taught in conjuction with the ability to find information.

Thank you for taking the time to read and respond to our blog.

"This is not to say that these sites should not be trusted but rather the person of tomorrow must know not only how to find the information but to evaluate it and use it ethically.

Well this maturity level comes over a period of time. It doesnt come instantly.
